Parallel Parking: How Your Mirrors Save Your Rims

Parking isn't instinct, it's calculation. If your mirror glass is correctly adjusted, you can slot your vehicle into any gap in one move, protecting your rims and bumpers.

The Flow of the Optimal Approach

Side Distance Stop alongside the car in front at a distance of 60 centimeters (about the width of an open door). If you're closer, your front end will clip the neighboring car as you turn.

The Starting Point Reverse until your car's rear pillar lines up with the rear light of the car next to you. Turn the wheel all the way to the right.

The Golden Angle Watch the left mirror. Stop reversing the exact moment you see the entire second (curb-side) taillight of the car behind you inside the glass. That's the perfect 45° diagonal.

Straight Reverse Straighten the wheel and continue reversing straight back, checking the right mirror.

The Pivot Point Once your front-right door handle visually "touches" the curb in the right mirror, turn the wheel all the way to the left.

Final Positioning Once your vehicle is parallel, put it in first gear and pull forward slightly to center yourself between the two cars.

Technical Note: Due to the nature of convex replacement mirrors, the handle "touching" the curb actually means you're 10-15 centimeters away. That's the ideal safety margin.
